beijing. 2007. while out for a walk in the hutong district, i came around a corner and an elderly woman was cutting herbs for her store on the sidewalk. i watched her for several minutes and then asked, in my best chinese, if i could photograph her. after shooting a series of portraits, she decided she was done and stood up for a break. i looked down to see what she was leaving and she had put her scissors down on her next project. she looked perplexed as i shot a few images of her hardware atop the cilantro, smiling the entire time.
